Earlier scans often cannot detect a heartbeat and may lead to unnecessary anxiety.

Everything you need to know before your appointment

Do I need a full bladder?
  • For transvaginal (internal) scans, your bladder should be empty.

  • You may use the toilet just before your appointment.
  • For transabdominal scan (belly scan) you need a full bladder.
What should I bring?
  • Your appointment confirmation
  • Dates of your last menstrual period (if known)
  • Details of previous scans, fertility treatment or miscarriages (if applicable)
What should I wear?
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the waist down.
  • You will be given privacy at all times.
What happens during the scan?
  • The scan is performed gently using a thin ultrasound probe for an internal transvaginal scan
  • It should not be painful, though mild pressure may be felt.
  • You are in control throughout — the scan can be stopped at any time.
  • If you choose to decline internal transvaginal scan, you can, however the information from a transabdominal or belly scan cannot be 100% accurate.

What can the scan show?
  • Confirmation that the pregnancy is in the womb
  • Detection of a heartbeat (when appropriate)
  • Accurate dating of the pregnancy
  • Assessment of symptoms such as bleeding or pain
